Skyrim: Beginner Guide to Your First Playthrough
limitlesstoaster
Skyrim is one of the most expansive RPGs ever made and can be overwhelming when you first step out of Helgen. These tips will help you build a strong foundation and avoid the common mistakes that limit most first playthroughs.
1. Pick a clear playstyle early
Skyrim lets you do everything but spreading your skills too thin makes you weak at everything. Pick one of three archetypes early: warrior (melee and heavy armor), rogue (sneak and light armor), or mage (destruction and conjuration). Focus your skill upgrades within that archetype and you will always feel powerful.
The most beginner-friendly build is a two-handed warrior with heavy armor. It is straightforward, forgiving, and deals massive damage without requiring timing-based mechanics like sneak attacks or careful spell management.
2. Always talk to innkeepers
Innkeepers in every city give you local rumors that often lead to unique quests, locations, and rewards. They also sell food, rent rooms for healing, and know where important NPCs are. Making a habit of talking to the innkeeper when you enter a new city ensures you never miss hidden content.
3. Join the Companions early
The Companions guild in Whiterun is the best early faction for warrior builds. Joining gives you access to followers who carry your loot, sell items at your level, and provide combat support. The questline is also relatively short and gives you a powerful early game reward.
4. Save constantly and in multiple slots
Skyrim has bugs. NPCs get stuck, quests break, and essential characters occasionally die unexpectedly. Save in a new slot every 15 to 20 minutes and before every important conversation or quest step. Having multiple saves means a bug never destroys significant progress.
Never overwrite your only save file. Always create a new save rather than saving over old ones. Skyrim quest bugs are common and sometimes only become apparent hours after they occur. An older save might be the only way to recover.
5. Do not ignore Smithing and Enchanting
The strongest equipment in Skyrim is not found in dungeons but crafted. Leveling Smithing lets you craft and improve weapons and armor far beyond what you find. Enchanting lets you add magical effects to any item. A crafted and enchanted set of armor at level 40 outperforms any legendary item you find exploring.
6. Followers carry your weight
Every follower has a carry weight limit and will carry items for you without complaint. When you are overloaded transfer heavy items like ore, ingots, and extra weapons to your follower. Lydia from Whiterun is the earliest and most reliable follower and carries up to 300 weight which effectively doubles your carrying capacity.
7. Learn to use Shouts effectively
Dragon Shouts are one of the most powerful tools in your arsenal and new players often forget they have them. Unrelenting Force knocks enemies off ledges and interrupts attacks. Whirlwind Sprint closes distance instantly. Ice Form freezes tough enemies solid. Unlock Dragon Words at word walls and use them in every difficult fight.
8. Clear dungeons completely
Most dungeons in Skyrim have a shortcut exit at the end that brings you back near the entrance. Always clear dungeons fully before leaving. The chest at the end of a dungeon always contains leveled loot scaled to your current level and is often the best item in the entire dungeon.
9. Invest in Whiterun early
Whiterun is the most central city in Skyrim and has a blacksmith, general merchant, court wizard, and inn all within walking distance. Buy Breezehome the house in Whiterun as early as possible for 5000 gold. Having a home base with storage prevents inventory management from becoming a constant headache.
10. Do side quests before the main story
The main story in Skyrim is good but the side content is where the game truly shines. The Thieves Guild, Dark Brotherhood, College of Winterhold, and Companions all have excellent questlines with unique rewards. Do not rush toward the main story. Explore, join factions, and absorb the world at your own pace.
If you are playing on PC the modding community for Skyrim is enormous. Mods can fix bugs, add content, and completely transform the visual experience. Check Nexus Mods after your first playthrough to see what is possible.
