Minecraft: 10 Things Every Beginner Should Know

Most guides throw you straight into advanced mechanics. These are the fundamentals that actually matter when you are just starting out in Minecraft.
1. Always carry a bed
Sleeping skips the night and resets your spawn point. Dying without a bed set means you respawn at world spawn — potentially thousands of blocks from your base. Craft a bed on day one and sleep every single night until you are well established.
2. Never dig straight down
Never dig straight down. This is the number one rule of Minecraft. Digging straight down drops you into lava, ravines, or caves with no warning. Always dig at an angle or use a staircase pattern.
3. Torches prevent mob spawning
Monsters only spawn in darkness. Light up your base, your mine, and any caves you explore with torches. Coal is everywhere — you will never run out if you keep an eye out for it while mining stone.
4. Stone is better than wood for tools
New players stick with wood tools too long. The moment you find stone — which is everywhere just below the surface — craft stone tools. They mine twice as fast and last four times longer than wood.
5. Water puts out lava
Always keep a bucket of water in your hotbar when mining deep underground. Lava lakes are extremely common near bedrock level. Pour water on lava immediately if you fall in.
6. Shields block almost everything
Craft a shield as soon as you have iron. Hold right click to block arrows, sword attacks, and even creeper explosions. A shield changes combat completely for new players and costs only six wood planks and one iron ingot.
7. Hunger affects healing
You only heal automatically when your hunger bar is almost full. Eating just enough to survive is not enough — keep your hunger topped up at all times and you will heal passively from any damage you take.
8. Your first iron should be a pickaxe
New players often use their first iron on armor. Resist the temptation. An iron pickaxe mines much faster than stone and is required to mine diamonds, gold, and other valuable ores. Tools before armor in early game.
9. Creepers are the most dangerous enemy
Creepers silently sneak up and explode destroying your base and your inventory items. Always listen for the hissing sound and sprint away immediately. Never stand still when you hear it.
10. Write down your coordinates
Press F3 to see your coordinates. Write down the X Y Z numbers for your base on day one. Getting lost is the most common reason new players quit the game entirely — having coordinates means you can always find your way home no matter how far you explore.
On console or mobile you can find coordinates in the game settings or pause menu map. Set a waypoint or write the numbers down somewhere physical — do not trust your memory when you are deep in a cave.
