Oblivion: Beginner Guide to Your First Playthrough

Oblivion is a classic RPG that still holds up beautifully today. But it has quirks that confuse new players and one notorious system that can ruin a playthrough if you do not understand it. These tips will set you up for success from the start.
1. The class system matters more than Skyrim
Unlike Skyrim, Oblivion has a class system that determines which skills are your major skills. Major skills level up faster and contribute to your character level. This sounds good but it creates a critical problem. If your major skills are things you use constantly you will level up faster than your combat ability improves.
The most common mistake in Oblivion is making Speechcraft, Mercantile, or Acrobatics a major skill. These level up constantly from normal play and push your character level up without improving your combat effectiveness. Enemies scale to your level making the game progressively harder.
2. Understand the leveling system
Oblivion has a famous and controversial leveling system. Enemies scale to your character level but your combat power scales to your skill levels. If you level up by doing things other than combat your level rises but you stay weak while enemies get stronger. Focus your major skills on what you actually fight with.
3. Choose Birthsign wisely
Your Birthsign gives you a permanent passive bonus. For beginners The Warrior sign which gives plus ten to blade, blunt, and hand to hand is a safe reliable choice for melee builds. The Mage sign gives plus fifty magicka for spellcasters. Avoid The Serpent sign as its ability is situational and the bonus is rarely useful.
4. Complete the tutorial fully
The Imperial Prison tutorial dungeon is longer than most players expect. Complete it fully and loot every container you find. You will get your starting equipment, learn basic mechanics, and earn a magic item from Emperor Uriel Septim that is useful throughout the early game. Do not rush through it.
5. Join the Fighters Guild immediately
The Fighters Guild is available in every major city and provides a steady stream of early game quests, gold, and gear. It is the best faction for combat-focused beginners. The quests are straightforward, the rewards are reliable, and advancing in rank unlocks merchants who sell better equipment than general stores.
6. Block attacks actively
Oblivion has an active blocking system where holding right click with a weapon or shield equipped blocks attacks. Blocking at the right moment before an attack lands performs a power block that staggers your enemy. This is essential for melee builds against tough enemies and very different from Skyrim where blocking is more passive.
7. Repair your equipment constantly
Equipment in Oblivion degrades as you use it. A weapon at low condition deals significantly less damage. Armor at low condition provides less protection. Carry repair hammers and fix your gear after every dungeon run. At higher Armorer skill you can repair items beyond their base condition for a temporary bonus.
8. Close Oblivion Gates strategically
Oblivion Gates open throughout the game world as you progress the main story. Closing them gives you Sigil Stones which can be used to enchant equipment with powerful effects. However closing gates also advances your level. Close them deliberately and use the Sigil Stones to power up your gear before tackling harder content.
9. Use persuasion and bribery
Oblivion has a disposition system where NPCs are more helpful when they like you. High disposition unlocks better prices, quest options, and information. The persuasion minigame and bribery both raise disposition quickly. Investing a few points in Speechcraft early makes every NPC interaction smoother throughout the game.
10. Explore every city before heading into the wilderness
Oblivion has nine major cities each with unique quests, merchants, and characters. Spend time in each city when you first arrive. Talk to everyone, check notice boards for quests, and locate the merchants and trainers available. Building your knowledge of each city early prevents you from missing important content later.
Oblivion Remastered was released in 2025 with significantly improved visuals and quality of life changes. If you have access to it the Remastered version is the best way to experience Oblivion for the first time in 2026.
