Mordhau: Beginner Guide to Melee Combat
limitlesstoaster
Mordhau is one of the most mechanically deep melee games ever made. New players get destroyed constantly and it feels completely unfair. It is not unfair. There is a skill gap and it takes time to close it. These tips will help you understand what is actually happening and start improving.
1. Learn the three attack types
Every weapon has three attacks: slash, stab, and overhead. Each has different range, speed, and hitbox. Slashes are wide and great for hitting multiple enemies. Stabs have longer reach and are harder to dodge. Overheads come down vertically and are excellent against shields. Mix them up to become unpredictable.
2. Chamber to counter attacks
A chamber is performed by initiating the same attack type as your opponent at the right moment. It deflects their attack and flows directly into your own. Chambers are the highest skill technique in Mordhau but even learning basic chambers against common attacks gives you a significant advantage over players who only block.
Start by learning to chamber slashes only. Slashes are the most common attack and chambering them becomes muscle memory faster than trying to chamber all three attack types at once.
3. Footwork wins fights
Moving into your attacks extends their reach. Moving away reduces the reach of incoming attacks. Circling an opponent changes the angle of your attacks making them harder to read. Good footwork is what separates intermediate Mordhau players from beginners more than any other single skill.
4. Do not use the Executioner sword at first
New players gravitate toward the biggest two-handed weapons because they deal the most damage. This is a trap. Slow heavy weapons punish you harshly for missing and do not teach you the footwork and timing mechanics that matter long term. Start with a one-handed sword or messer to learn the fundamentals first.
5. Use the training area extensively
Mordhau has a training area with bots at different difficulty levels. Spend your first hours here not in live matches. Practice blocking, chambering, and footwork against training dummies before exposing yourself to experienced players online. The gap between trained and untrained beginners is enormous.
6. Feints create openings
A feint cancels your attack mid-animation and immediately starts a new one. This baits your opponent into blocking early leaving them open for your follow-up real attack. Feinting is one of the core offensive tools in Mordhau and something you should start practicing once you understand basic attacks and blocks.
7. Armor changes everything
Heavy armor dramatically reduces damage taken but slows you down. Light armor lets you move faster and dodge more effectively. Your loadout choice fundamentally changes how you need to play. Beginners often do well in heavy armor because it gives more room for error. As you improve lighter builds become more rewarding.
8. Play Frontline mode first
Frontline is the 32 versus 32 team mode and is the best mode for learning. The large scale means you can pick fights selectively, retreat when overwhelmed, and observe how experienced players move and fight. Skirmish and Duel modes pit you against focused opponents immediately which is brutal for beginners.
9. Dragging extends your attack
Moving your mouse during a swing changes the hitbox timing of your attack. Dragging your mouse away from your opponent slows the attack timing making it hit later than expected. Accelerating toward them speeds it up. This technique called morphing is used by advanced players to make attacks nearly impossible to react to.
10. Expect to lose for a long time
Mordhau has one of the steepest skill curves of any multiplayer game. You will lose consistently for your first 20 to 30 hours. This is normal. Every loss teaches you something if you pay attention. Focus on improving one specific thing each session rather than trying to win. Improvement compounds and the game becomes deeply satisfying once the mechanics click.
Watching experienced players on YouTube or Twitch and studying their footwork and attack timing is one of the fastest ways to accelerate your improvement. Seeing the mechanics in action is easier to absorb than reading about them.
