Genshin Impact: A Character Building Guide
Kah Chee
Hey there! With hope, you’ve seen the previous guides and you're ready for the next step. In this guide, I’ll attempt to water down the complications of building your character.
I’m not one of the best players there is, but its wise to take this as a nudge to put you on the right track.
Do not worry about about it being too complicated, it’ll be a very simplified version of what is. To better aid your understanding as a beginner (Hehe).

So, remember when I said that most of the damage actually comes from your character's elemental and damage mastery? Yep. We’ll be going through the very basics of building your character(s) so you can capitalize on everything you learnt from the last guide.
What to Understand First
Having in mind how elemental reactions work, your priority should be on getting together a team that brings your favorite reactions to life. For example; if you adore the 'Freezer reaction, your team has to have characters that use Cryo and Hydro. To trigger the sub-reaction 'Shatter', you may need a Geo element user in your team. That’s already 3 out of 4 members of your team already decided.
For the fourth member of your starting team, you can add characters who support the team. Either with their healing abilities, or a character that further adds to the elemental reaction, (an overall backup) to boost damage dealing.
To get right into it, we’ll be taking the things you should be mindful of, one by one. So brace up!
Stats (A.K.A Attributes)
Clicking on your character details reveals your stats.

You can see things like; HP, Defence, attack, elemental mastery, max stamina, energy recharge, Crit rate and Crit damage.
While you hop on the horse of leveling up your stats, have in mind that not every character requires the same amounts of stats to perform better. So each character requires special attention to what makes them stronger.
To better understand this, reach for your character info page and click on 'Talents'. This shows you exactly what a character doubles off of. For example; A character may gain more damage potential from defense.
This doesn't mean you should spam upgrade the character's defense to make them stronger.
Why? I mean, it does seem like the obvious thing to do, right? Not in this case. Something else also affects better performance and it’s the character's 'Elemental Damage'. So this leveling up has to be spread across both the ED and talents. Don’t fret, we’ll take a better look at talents in just a few.
Weapons
Every character has the ability to wield only one type of weapon. And there are essentially five (5) types/classes of weapons in the game. - A Sword - A much thicker Sword - A Bow - A Spear - A Magical Object. (An Orb, a Spellbook, e.t.c. Most characters who wield this are called catalysts)

Characters who wield these Magical Objects are often limited to elemental attacks only, as they do not have any actual weapons to inflict melee damage.
For the weapons, two different stats need attention. The first one is the stat that influences basic attacks. I.e., a level up increases damage output. Then the second one. This is a stat that influences your character's overall stat. It’s basically like a part of your character. Level up and your character has significantly better use and damage mastery.
Artifacts
Ah yes, where it gets interesting. Unlike the others, artifacts are quite a bit more complex. However, that’s exactly why I’m here. To make it easier to understand. Honestly, you don’t have to bother yourself about it too much cause not every player understood them until later on. I barely knew what they were or what they meant. I only knew I got some random cool objects at the end of battles. Stumbling upon it while searching for daily commissions was honestly a discovery.
But anyways, it’s a good thing to know still. We (the much early players) make these mistakes so you don’t have to. There are 5 different artifacts that can be equipped on each character. - A Feather - A Flower - A Goblet - A Circlet - Sands They each come with a set of main stats and substats. The feather has Attack stats while the Flower has HP stats. The other three, however, have a couple more stats. Like the Sands having; Hp% ATK% DEF% Elemtal Mastery Energy Recharge And the Circlet having the first four in common but with an additional Crit Rate Crit Damage Healing Bonus And the Goblet also replicating the first four but with an addition of all the elements' Damage Bonus%, and Physical Damage Bonus %.
So a lot of characters would easily benefit from upgrading the Circlet's Crit Rate and Crit Damage, while upgrading the Elemental Damage Bonus on the Goblet.

There are also Artifact sets which, if completed, grants the character with additional strength and potential.
Talents
Of course, not every character needs a level up of their talents. For example; Supporting characters who rarely have to engage in combat wouldn't need to have their attack talent leveled up. Rather, a better investment would be in their skill and sometimes characters don't even need that leveled up too.
I’m certain you’re already conflicted with how you should know which Talent needs leveling up. Luckily, the game does have an integrated system that helps you understand what needs more attention, and why. Helping you place priority and focusing on one at a time.
These are only "beginner friendly" tips. Any character, regardless of their role, may be your main. And can be your hardest hitter even though they're seen as a supporting character. Provided you play your cards right, That is. XD
I for one, really like Barbara. She’s considered a support character but I use her just as often as I use Michelle. She’s practically the all-rounder of my starting team.

And that is pretty much it. Now that you’ve read up until here, I hope you actually understand my watering-down as well as you should. Afterall, your experience is what matters the most.
Maybe next time we could go over how you can build a team and be a better player I general.
We'll definitely see again, Traveler.
